FINALLY!!! Scrimmage coming to Big Island!

Last season, the Warriors often struggled against hurry-up offenses. This year, they implemented a flexible defensive scheme utilizing the "elephant" — a position that earned its name because the first two letters stand for end and linebacker. The scheme calls for two defensive tackles, a defensive end and the elephant, a stand-up pass rusher playing on the line of scrimmage in a 4-3 front or in coverage in a 3-4.

"Instead of subbing, we want to go from four-man fronts to three-man fronts on the move," defensive coordinator Dave Aranda said. "That way we don't have to sub, and teams can't no-huddle us. We have our people already on the field."

Brother, it was so good meeting up with you at the scrimmage. Brah, if you get some years of eligibility left, I nominate you for the position of Left Tackle. I thought I saw Coach Shaw talking to you at the scrimmage!

Overall was a good day. Still got a ways to go, but I like what I see. One of my questions to Coach Mack was "So do you see any of the incoming defensive recruits making a serious push for playing time this fall?" His response: "Absolutely." I know we got some stud DB's coming in, but I was really trying to gauge his feel on Brandon Dayley. Our linebackers, albeit fast and good -- are quite thin in terms of numbers. That is one thing I noticed at the scrimmage. Even with Peredes back this summer, it still looked pretty thin at LB.

Dline on the other hand has an abundance of players. I was somewhat intrigued by big bradduh walk-on Sam Ohai. Looked pretty decent on one on ones. Technique is good, but gotta work on his feet. I wonder if he will make the squad. Kind of a longshot, but you never know. Dee Maggitt made some good plays too. I've said it before and I'mma say it again -- I hope to see Paclabar get on the field. That boy plays with some fearlessness and big heart.

FYI we never got a haka. I know that's not what's important but would have been awesome for the fans and would have love to get video of it up close. Oh well, I'll get another chance in 3 years lol

Hopefully we don't need to wait another 3 years! Someone should let Coach Mack know that the Big Island counts for two Mauis, or Two Kauais! They need to come back to the Kona side next. For those of us who live here, we know that there are two islands that make up this island -- Hilo side and Kona side. Separated by one big mass of aina. Kona folks deserve a visit soon.
